If you just heard Jonny Lang's voice and guitar playing skills, you might think that he was a black 40-year old blues legend at the peak of his career...However, when I went to his concert, I saw a 25 year old white clean-cut smiley guy who could play the guitar and sing like no one that I have ever heard. Then when I heard his open and honest yet straight forward lyrics about his faith while still in the secular scene, I was even more impressed.
Jonny Lang is a blues guitar prodigy who started recording when he was 15 years old (that cd went platinum). He has traveled with great muscisians like B. B. King, Buddy Guy, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and Sting. He was completely in that scene...addicted to drugs and alchohol...However, there was a time in his life when he decided to "Turn Around" (the name of his recent Album)...I will let one of his songs tell the rest of the story...
"I use to live my life in fear, was worried all the time
From waking up to laying down,
I had no peace of mind
The world became a darkened place, a struggle without end
Although bitter times those were, the days that I had begun to understand
I was only a man
I grew up singing songs in church, with questions in my mind
And turned my back and ran away, from God who gave me life
Then one night his presence fell, I wept and shook and then
I fell down and cried 'Dear Jesus, rescue me again, I understand, i am only a man...'"
So, Jonny Lang is not only the best guitar player that I have ever heard...but he is fellow brother who is using his amazing talents to glorify our Father.
Can I also give a shout out to the big tambourine playing guy that sang back-up?! Maybe I could be a tambourine playing girl someday....I guess "Anything's Possible."
